“An insider’s view on the Greek sovereign debt crisis”
With an introduction and Discussion by
David Blake
Finance Faculty of Cass Business School,
Director of the Pensions Institute and Chairman of Square Mile Consultants
The aim of the presentation is to give an integrated view on the sovereign debt crisis in Greece and the Euro, identifying the real sources of the problem as well as the challenges that the state, local banking institutions, investors and citizens are facing on a daily basis. The lecture will initially provide a detailed chronicle of the events of the last 18 months from an insider’s point of view, along with the mistakes that have happened in the past and keep happening both by the Greek state but also by its European partners. It will then discuss the feasibility and the effectiveness of all the structural reform programs and fiscal consolidation initiatives that are currently taking place, analyzing the pros and cons of every different scheme. Finally, it will identify any opportunities that might arise from all these changes as well as it will investigate all the potential public debt scenarios and their effects in Greece, the Euro, as well as the global economy.
